Summer Hummingbird Feeding Tips

We love to see hummingbirds at our feeders in the summer! The best thing is to plant salvias, agastache, and other hummingbird loving plants, but it is fun to see them at a feeder. But along with having a feeder comes the responsibility to maintain it for the health and safety of the hummingbirds. Here are just a few tips to make sure we are doing it the best way for the hummingbirds.

~Start with a clean feeder each time you fill the feeder - white vinegar and then rinsing thoroughly works well.

~ Use a 1 to 4 mixture of cane sugar to water for nectar mixture– no red food coloring! Get the water hot then stir in the sugar so it dissolves. Store unused mixture in refrigerator for 1 week.

~ In hot weather the nectar mixture in the feeders should be changed frequently – even everyday during really hot weather.

~Fill your feeder with just a small amount of nectar as it will just get wasted since a few hummers can’t drink very much in a couple of days. Don’t reuse any leftover feeder nectar – start with fresh nectar.

~Think of your feeder like a fresh flower that will fade quickly.

~Then enjoy watching those hummingbirds knowing you are doing it the very best way!
